About Stephen Whatcott

Stephen Whatcott is a self-taught artist working in Worcestershire, UK producing minimalist, abstract expressionist paintings. With roots based on drawing, his work tends to utilise line and form. These largely monochrome abstract paintings explore solidity, texture and composition, often executed in a seemingly aggressive, or at least expressive, manner.

In 2015 Whatcott won the Painting category of the Secret Art Prize open art competition and in 2018 was shortlisted for the Rise Art Prize.

About this Artwork

With roots based in drawing, this body of work uses a limited vocabulary of forms and marks, with the removal of any unnecessary elements. The off-white field isn't submissive but is an active part of the painting. The balance between positive and negative space, the placement of forms and their proportions are all vital components of the composition.

These works develop through a process of adjustment and response, with improvisation playing a significant role. Decisions are made throughout the act of painting rather than from any predetermined plan. Forms are often interrupted, cropped or withheld, allowing the exploration of the tension between completion and incompletion. Essentially, what is omitted is just as important as what remains.

Drawing underpins all of these paintings. Line, edge and structure remain central concerns even when working in paint.
