Buying guideChoosing drawings and works on paper for your walls
A pencil line, a wash of watercolour or a layered collage can bring detail and warmth to a room without needing a large wall. Explore works on paper for a reading corner, hallway or workspace, paying attention to the marks and textures that make each piece distinctive. Before buying, compare the medium, paper condition and framing requirements as carefully as the image.
01Look at the medium
Check whether you are choosing a drawing, watercolour, collage or mixed-media work, and whether it is an original or a printed edition. Close-up images help reveal pencil marks, layered materials and the paper surface; the description should explain how the work was made.
02Protect the surface
Check whether framing is included and allow for its cost if it is not. Ask a framer about suitable mounting and glazing for the medium, especially for delicate pastel or raised collage. Choose a display position away from strong direct sunlight and damp.
03Check condition notes
Look at the edges and corners as well as the image. Ask about creases, discolouration, repairs or previous mounting when these are not explained. An intentionally rough edge is different from damage, so use the seller's notes rather than guessing from a photograph.
04Use scale thoughtfully
Confirm whether the measurements describe the image, the whole sheet or the framed work. A mount and frame can add considerable width. Measure your wall or shelf and check how the work will be packed and delivered before ordering.
