Andrea Benetti

Andrea Benetti (Bologna, Italy, 1964) is an Italian visual artist whose practice encompasses painting, photography, drawing, installation and video art. His work explores the relationship between the earliest manifestations of human creativity and the language of contemporary art, developing an original artistic vision that reinterprets archaic symbols, primordial forms, natural elements and imagery associated with prehistoric culture.

In 2006, he conceived and authored the Neo-Cave Art Manifesto (Manifesto dell’Arte Neorupestre), officially presented in 2009 at the 53rd Venice Biennale at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, within the Nature and Dreams (Natura e sogni) pavilion. The Manifesto provides the theoretical foundation for his research and proposes a contemporary reinterpretation of the origins of artistic expression. Through stylised anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures, essential geometric forms, gestural marks and textured surfaces, Benetti develops a distinctive visual language that connects ancestral memory with contemporary sensibility.

A particularly significant chapter in his career is a collection of artworks created using Palaeolithic pigments dating back approximately 40,000 years. These are the same pigments used by a prehistoric human to create five painted stones discovered in Grotta di Fumane, near Verona, dating back approximately 40,000 years. The materials, including natural earth pigments, charcoal and ochre, underwent scientific study and were made available to the artist, with certification, by the University of Ferrara. Benetti used them to create contemporary artworks, establishing a direct and tangible connection with one of the earliest forms of human artistic expression. The distinctive feature of this research lies in the use of the original painting materials, the very same pigments employed during the Palaeolithic period. They thus create a tangible link between the creative act of a prehistoric human and that of a contemporary artist.

In 2011, Benetti presented Painting Returns to the Caves (La pittura ritorna nelle grotte) inside the Castellana Caves, creating a fully conceived exhibition space within a natural cave. The installation featured freestanding exhibition walls and a lighting system specifically designed to enhance the artworks in the underground environment. The project established a dialogue between contemporary art, the natural setting and the memory of prehistoric caves.

Other exhibitions and projects include Colours and Sounds of the Origins (Colori e suoni delle origini) at Palazzo d’Accursio in Bologna (2013); VR60768 – Anthropomorphic Figure at the Italian Chamber of Deputies in Rome (2015); Pater Luminum at the Civic Museum of Gallipoli (2017); Homage to Cave Painting (Omaggio alla pittura rupestre) at the Museo del Castello di San Giorgio in La Spezia (2016); Colors in Venice at Palazzo Zaguri in Venice (2023); Prehistoric Wave at The Warehouse in Milan (2023); and Light in Silence (Luce nel silenzio) at Palazzo dei Capitani in Ascoli Piceno (2025). In 2010, he was invited as a special guest, outside the competition, to the 61st edition of the Francesco Paolo Michetti International Prize.

His works are held in important institutional collections, including those of the United Nations in New York, the Vatican, the Presidency of the Italian Republic at the Quirinal Palace, the Italian Chamber of Deputies and UNESCO Italy. His works are also held by museums and cultural institutions such as MAMbo – Museum of Modern Art of Bologna; Museion in Bolzano; CAMeC – Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art in La Spezia; the Michetti Museum in Francavilla al Mare; and the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Ascoli Piceno.

His professional activity includes collaborations with cultural and academic institutions, including the universities of Bari, Bergamo, Bologna, Ferrara, Lecce, Messina, Roma Tre and Venice, as well as Johns Hopkins University. His artistic research has also been the subject of academic studies and university-level investigations. His profile is documented in the Treccani Encyclopaedia, De Agostini’s Sapere and WikiArt. His biography is available in 45 language editions of Wikipedia.

Alongside his artistic practice, Benetti develops cultural promotion and curatorial projects. He is the founder of Atelier Quindici (Atelier 15), an international platform dedicated to presenting and promoting artists from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds worldwide. The project encourages dialogue between different artistic languages and practices, fostering opportunities for exchange and the international circulation of contemporary art.

In 2014, Benetti received the International Excellence Award at the University of Bari. In 2020, he received the 49th Nettuno d’Oro, the most prestigious award bestowed by the City of Bologna, recognising prominent figures in contemporary culture.
