About Tony Alcock

I was born in Nottingham (UK) in June 1947. My post-school art education included a Pre-Dip at Loughborough followed by studying Fine Art / Painting at Leicester Polytechnic. After graduating and producing my 'Light Organ', I enjoyed a couple of years being recognised as an original and practising artist in the UK. However, I chose to pursue life as a teacher, gaining a PGCE from Bristol University, where I later briefly lectured in Art education.

Circumstances changed and I found myself working as a musician, becoming a music shop owner and eventually working in a successful graphics-based company, MOGO UK. From 1993 I was able to reactivate my artistic ambitions. I identified myself as AMA; I've always liked the symmetry of my initials. Most of the work on this Artlimes website was produced after 1993.

About this edition

This screen-printed image is taken from an old postcard found in Menton, in the south of France. Its charm, even then, was the dated nature of the picture, no doubt a photograph taken in the late 1940s–early 1950s. Clearly the development and production of my 1974 interpretation of this joyful seaside image is much influenced by the arrival of 'Pop Art' in the intervening years.

Such is the sense of visual rhythm within the work that I went on to reproduce the work as a form of triptych, producing a work that has something in common with a strip of just three frames of a movie film, in this case animating a lovely young lady at one with herself, frolicking in a seaside setting. The oakwood frame replicates the sense of waves on the seashore whilst the background colours of each of the three individual images reflect the three predominant colours in the principal image; that is to say not those which are the golden–ochre colour of the subject's skin tones; very revealing!
