This painting draws upon an archetypal image deeply rooted in our collective imagination. The solitary tree, a timeless presence in myth, legend, and folklore, becomes a symbol of strength, wisdom, resilience, and independence. Bathed in the soft glow of distant light, it stands quietly within the landscape, evoking a sense of hope, beauty, and our enduring connection to the natural world.
This original, one-of-a-kind artwork has been painted with acrylics on a circular canvas. The origins of my work begin with nature and the world out doors. So I start my process with direct observation, making sketches and taking photographs on location to use as references in the studio. The tree you see in the painting comes from a tree near my studio, imagination and creativity play their part in the continuing process. From these studies, I work intuitively laying down initial layers with a brush, then building texture and depth through impasto techniques applied with a palette knife. I draw upon the optical mixing methods of the Impressionists, as well as traditional techniques such as scumbling and glazing used by the old masters.
I continue refining the painting until it reaches a natural conclusion.
