Kingfishers over the River Ouse is a semi-abstract contemporary English landscape painting inspired by the River Ouse in Sussex and its kingfishers. It measures 36 x 24 x 1.5 inches.
The painting was created by building layers of oil paint over a blurred depiction of the river, hinting at the wildflowers, pink Himalayan balsam plants and trees on each side, with a view towards a bend in the river in the distance. Vertical layers of transparent paint and the two kingfishers are layered over this to create the sense of a scene unfolding fleetingly, as sightings of kingfishers tend to be.
This is the second in a series of liminal landscapes in which I use real places painted from memory that felt liminal: between spaces, ethereal and slightly magical. Painted on deep-edge canvas with white edges, it is ready to hang and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
