About Paul Stowe

One of the foremost pencil artists in the country, he works from his gallery and studio in St Ives, Cornwall, and works tirelessly to create hyper-realistic portraits of the rich, famous and interesting.

Using just a pencil, paper and eraser, his work goes beyond the detail even a camera can capture and is sold across the globe, hanging on walls as far afield as Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the USA.

About this artwork

An original pencil drawing by Paul Stowe - Black Jaguar (Black Panther)

Is this a black panther or a jaguar? Well, a black panther is not a separate species. It is a melanistic colour variant of either a leopard (Panthera pardus) or a jaguar (Panthera onca).

(Melanism is caused by genetic variation affecting pigment distribution, resulting in a coat that appears black or very dark brown. Despite their dark colouration, black panthers still have rosettes. These spots become visible when light hits the coat at certain angles.)

Drawn in pencil on Bristol board paper, this drawing measures 36 cm wide × 50 cm tall.
