Aerobic Cognisant, 2021

Woman in a patchwork leotard at an aerobic class, part of a series of paintings of women at exercise. The paintings are the result of individual observation and the collective goodwill (or exhaustive indifference) of the women involved.

The work consists of a Rowney Cryla acrylic base coat of burnt orange over the gesso manufacturer's finish. Opaque pigments have been used to lay down some areas, also acting as an undercoating for sections of the subject matter. Subsequent layers of acrylic paint have been applied in washes which have been thinned using Liquidex airbrush medium. This thin multiple layering of pigment allows for subtle tonal attributes and a degree of luminosity, avoiding the usual flat acrylic finish.

Acrylic medium on rolled-edge canvas board and finished with a coat of Winsor & Newton Satin UV varnish; this not only protects the painting but has a unifying effect. Ready to frame and hang.
