Buying guideChoosing sculpture for your home or workspace
A sculpture can give a shelf a focal point or turn an overlooked corner into a place worth noticing. Unlike a picture on a wall, its shape changes as you move around it. Explore pieces from artists, galleries and retailers with the setting in mind, then compare their dimensions, weight, materials and installation needs before deciding.
01Measure the footprint
Check height, width and depth, including any base, and leave room to walk past comfortably. Confirm the weight and choose a stable surface that can support it. Consider children, pets and busy routes through the room when deciding where it will stand.
02Understand the material
Read the material, finish and condition notes, and check whether the piece is unique or part of an edition. Detail photographs can reveal texture and patina. Do not assume a sculpture is suitable outdoors because of its appearance; confirm that use with the seller.
03Check handling and shipping
Ask about packaging, delivery access and installation for heavy or fragile pieces. Check whether a base or fixing is included and whether specialist handling is needed. Review the full delivery cost and return terms for your destination before buying.
04Think in viewpoints
Look for photographs from several angles rather than choosing from the front view alone. Think about the light, the background and how the piece will look from a seat or doorway. Give its outline enough space to be seen without crowding nearby objects.
