About Aleksandr Dubrovskyy

Mr Aleksandr Dubrovskyy was born in 1949 in Oryneno, Khmelnytsky Oblast, Ukraine.
He started painting early. The painting was his most favoured occupation, beyond all usual boyish interests and activities.
At 7 years he was admitted to the art school for children in Yenakiieve; at 16, Aleksandr entered Kharkiv College of Art (1965).

In 1969, graduating from the College of Art, he travels a lot and works assiduously on portrait and landscape painting.
His continuing work at the academic villa in Sednyov offered Aleksandr a happy and unique opportunity to work together with, and learn from, such eminent painters as Konstantyn Lomykin, Fedor Zakharov, Nikolay Glushchenko, Viktor Shatalin, and Tatyana Yablonskaya. They have profoundly influenced his artistic formation. Sednyov... this marvellous nook of Ukraine became the artist’s creative workshop.

About this Artwork

Lucky Catch

Painted in 2006, Lucky Catch captures a quiet rocky inlet on the coast of Kazantyp, a place once known for its untouched shoreline, crystal-clear water, and dramatic limestone formations shaped by centuries of wind and sea.

The painting focuses on the play of light across the rocks and water. Reflections shimmer between shades of blue, turquoise, silver, and violet, while the textured brushwork transforms stone and sea into a living mosaic of color. Rather than depicting a specific event, the work preserves a fleeting moment of stillness, when nature reveals its hidden harmony.

Today, this view carries an additional meaning. The coastline portrayed in the painting has changed significantly over the years due to both natural processes and human intervention. Some of the formations, shoreline details, and visual character of the place no longer exist in the same form. As a result, Lucky Catch serves not only as an expressive impressionist landscape but also as a visual memory of a disappearing coastal environment.

Created during an important period of Aleksandr Dubrovskyy's artistic development, this work demonstrates his fascination with light, reflection, and the emotional power of natural landscapes. The painting preserves a place that has become part of history while remaining timeless in its atmosphere and beauty.
