Woodpecker Realm is an original impasto oil painting of an English summer landscape, featuring a green woodpecker flying over a meadow. It measures 36 x 24 x 1.5 inches.
This painting was created wet-on-wet with generous layers of oil paint. The setting is East Chiltington in East Sussex at the beginning of September, after a long, hot summer. I came across the woodpecker while crossing this meadow towards the South Downs in the distance. I liked the way its colours harmonised with the last summer flowers, dry grasses and brambles, which is partly why I painted the bird as if it were emerging from, or merging into, the landscape itself.
Painted on deep-edge canvas with white edges, it is ready to hang and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
