Winter Calling is a colourful English winter landscape with snow glimpsed through the last leaves of autumn. It is 36 x 24 x 1.5 inches. This painting was made after a winter walk I took near the Mayfield area of Sussex, where there are many small hills and vales, part of the High Weald (formerly a vast ancient forest in the south of England). This view was one I came across of a farm on a hill, with light snow around it, seen from a small woodland. Some of the leaves were still on the trees in reds and golds, as well as the dark green of ivy on the oak tree trunks. I love the contrast of cold colours to warm colours. Like most of my landscape paintings, this is not an unusual subject, but I have nevertheless tried to portray it in a unique way so that some of the longing I feel for such places is expressed (yes, I desperately wish I lived in that farm). The painting is on wide-edge canvas, painted a muted purple colour, which integrates into the edges of the painting and helps propel the viewer into the scenery. Painted on deep-edge canvas, ready to hang. No frame is needed, and it comes with a certificate of authenticity.
