About ed watts

I am a portrait photographer by trade, but when I'm not shooting people, I love to point my camera in other directions and experiment. I use pinhole cameras, a digital SLR and a converted infra-red camera to make my images.

My main inspiration is the texture of the landscape. For the past few years, I have been out exploring the South Downs with my trusty assistant, a Whippet named Morse!

About this photograph

Cyanotype is an early photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print (it's where the term 'blueprint' comes from).

The process uses two chemicals: ammonium iron(III) citrate and potassium ferricyanide, applied (in my case, painted) onto paper, dried (in the dark), and then exposed to sunlight with the object placed directly on the coated paper.

In this case, a grass head was placed onto coated Khadi 100% cotton rag, handmade, acid-free paper and exposed to the sun, washed and dried.

Every cyanotype is unique.
