Maria Arias is a Venezuelan-French artist living in Houten, where she has found a deep sense of home in this open and welcoming environment.

In 2007, she read about a heartbreaking exhibition in which a starving dog was used as "art." That moment changed her life forever. She launched several campaigns to help stray animals in Venezuela and organized sterilization programs from the Netherlands. However, after witnessing immense cruelty, she decided to contribute to animal welfare in a different way.

This painting portrays a fox named Fidge, sitting calmly on a log with an attentive yet peaceful expression. The vibrant orange of the fox’s fur contrasts beautifully with the muted, blurred background, creating a natural and harmonious composition. The use of acrylic ink, airbrush, and colored pencils gives the piece depth and texture, highlighting the delicate details of the fox’s fur and the worn surface of the log.

Fidge’s story is a reminder of the challenges wildlife faces in a human-dominated world. Orphaned at a young age, Fidge and his siblings became dependent on local residents for food. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, he was fatally struck by a car while crossing a road in search of sustenance.

This artwork invites reflection on our relationship with nature and the impact of human activity on wildlife. It is both a tribute to Fidge and a gentle prompt to consider how we might better protect and coexist with animals in their changing environments.
