Penguins are aquatic, flightless birds that are highly adapted to life in the water. Their distinct shiny tuxedo-like appearance is called countershading, a form of camouflage that helps keep them safe in the water and can look almost metallic when wet. Penguins are hardy and resilient seabirds which thrive in some of the world’s most extreme conditions but the drastic and dangerous effects of climate change, pollution and unsustainable fishing are real threats to their future.

This acrylic painting has lots of fine detail including scales painted onto the black surface of the birds with a pearl-like iridescent paint that catches the light when viewed from across the room.
