About Gill Bustamante

I paint large semi-abstract oils that seek to capture, not just the visual details of a location, but its scents, sounds, and spiritual energy. They are inspired by encounters with landscapes, wildlife and birds, particularly the ancient landscapes of England.

My paintings are completely unique in style.
I often paint from memory as it better allows me to move beyond traditional realism, and into magical realism using colour, texture and light to express the magic I sense in wild meadows, forests, seas and rivers.
Animals, pathways, and portals are recurring motifs in my painting’s, often as symbols of transition, curiosity, and the mysteries that lie just beyond the visible. I am fascinated by the folklore and hidden stories woven into the countryside, and I strive to share that sense of wonder and connection through my art.

About this Artwork

A Slice of Heaven is a green English landscape painting of a riverbank in spring with lacy white wildflowers and deer. On the left riverbank can be seen cow parsley white flowers almost dancing out of the painting, and on the right riverbank, a delicate deer stands watching us in interest as deer do. Behind her are two more female deer waiting to take flight if their leader does so. The edges of the painting are blurred to give the feeling of the scenery floating out from the centre of the canvas. I like this effect as it gives you a tantalising glimpse of an English springtime landscape suddenly appearing. The colours are mostly shades of green and white. It was inspired, as many of my recent paintings have been, by long walks along Sussex riverbanks. This one particular piece of the riverbank is most like the river Rother near Salehurst TN32 5PJ. It is 40x40x1.5 inches, dark blue edges, ready to hang, no frame needed. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpyiXfLAMGM
