About Stephen Whatcott

Stephen Whatcott is a contemporary artist based in the Cotswolds, UK, producing paintings which explore the relationship between form and space with restraint.

With roots based in drawing, his work tends to utilise line and form. These largely monochrome paintings focus on reduction, using isolated shapes, interruptions and asymmetries to establish tension and structure within the picture plane.

About this Artwork

Edan is a minimalist, abstract expressionist painting focusing on the emotional impact of the image. The bold and striking structural forms concentrate on qualities such as truth, order, simplicity and harmony. They seek to create a conversation between the artist and the viewer.

From the old Irish name Áedán, a diminutive of Áed, the name of an Irish monk and saint of the 7th century and several characters in Irish mythology, Edan means 'born of fire'.
