Buying guideChoosing original paintings for your home or office
A painting above a sofa, beside a desk or at the end of a hallway can change how a space feels. Explore original paintings from artists, galleries and retailers, starting with the subjects and colours you enjoy living with. Then look beyond the image: the surface, dimensions, condition and framing all shape the work you will receive.
01Choose by feeling first
Consider what you want the room to feel like, whether quiet and restful or full of energy. You do not need to know an art movement to choose a painting. Notice which images hold your attention and how their colours work with your space.
02Check scale and placement
Measure the wall and nearby furniture, allowing space around the painting. Check whether the listed dimensions include a frame and whether the work arrives framed, stretched or rolled. A room photograph is useful inspiration, but the measurements should guide your choice.
03Read the artwork details
An oil painting on canvas and a watercolour on paper need different presentation and care. Read the medium and support, inspect detail photographs and check condition notes. Look for signature or provenance information where supplied; ask about anything the listing leaves unclear.
04Plan for its arrival
Check delivery to your destination, packaging, return terms and any framing still needed. For a large or heavy painting, consider access through doors and stairs as well as suitable hanging arrangements before placing your order.
