About Tony Alcock

I was born in Nottingham (UK) in June 1947. My post school art education included a Pre-Dip at Loughborough followed by studying Fine Art / Painting at Leicester Polytechnic. After graduating and producing my 'Light Organ', I enjoyed a couple of years being recognized as an original and practicing artist in the UK. However, I chose to pursue life as a teacher, gaining a PGCE from Bristol University, where I later briefly lectured in Art education.

Circumstances changed and I found myself working as a musician, became a music shop owner and eventually worked in a successful graphics based company, MOGO UK. From 1993, I was able to reactivate my artistic ambitions, identifying myself as AMA, I've always liked the symmetry of my initials. Most all the work on this Artlimes website will have been produced after 1993.

My Ageing Sexual Images 2002 - 2013

A quasi-triptych composition made from trial pieces and rejected elements of other artworks.

An image, intended for sexual titillation, that ‘inspired’ me since my school days was that of a young woman, her folded arms raised in such a way as to emphasise her impressive, conical shaped breasts. This picture, when combined with an image of Michelangelo’s David’s groin, itself interspersed with frames of pure coloured light, recorded onto 8mm. film in 1971 for another creative project, later became to be reworked in a number of artworks such as ‘Pin-up’ in my Pocket (q.v.).

The same, very low resolution image of Michelangelo’s David’s groin appears in a few other of my works, such as ‘Hello Fruit’ (q.v.) where it is blown up in scale to a point where it begins to loose identity and becomes an abstract colour feature. The idea of taking either emotionally or intellectually charged images and working them to the edge of recognition within a formal composition, has been one of the starting points of my artwork since 1993.

Lying about my studio are off-cuts or otherwise unsatisfactory sections of other works which, in themselves, have their own particular visual or textural qualities preserving them from the dustbin. Certain of these suitability scaled pieces displayed particular, yet sufficiently concordant, colour qualities so as be selected for the making up of this artwork which I choose to entitle, ‘My Ageing Sexual Images’.

For me as the artist, this concocted piece, formally based around four colour centres of off-white, blue, pink and brown, manages to display an elegance and objectivity about a subject that would have been most awkward for me to consider doing some years beforehand.
