About Gill Bustamante

I paint large semi-abstract oils that seek to capture, not just the visual details of a location, but its scents, sounds, and spiritual energy. They are inspired by encounters with landscapes, wildlife and birds, particularly the ancient landscapes of England.

My paintings are completely unique in style.
I often paint from memory as it better allows me to move beyond traditional realism, and into magical realism using colour, texture and light to express the magic I sense in wild meadows, forests, seas and rivers.
Animals, pathways, and portals are recurring motifs in my painting’s, often as symbols of transition, curiosity, and the mysteries that lie just beyond the visible. I am fascinated by the folklore and hidden stories woven into the countryside, and I strive to share that sense of wonder and connection through my art.

About this Artwork

Spring Calling is a vibrant semi abstract landscape painting of the glorious view across a bluebell field towards a green valley and the Ashdown Forest beyond. It is 36x24x1.5 inches. This landscape shows blossom trees at the top of a high bank on the left with cast shadows across most of the painting filled with bluebells. The valley below shows luminous green trees and beyond them is the Ashdown Forest. This painting was formulated in my mind last April after a late afternoon walk l I took near where I live. The sun was still bright but the shadows were long and the scent of bluebells and blossom was almost too much. I love the contrast between the sweep of shadows where the bluebells are growing to light in the clearing below plus the way some of the pink blossom was lit from the low rays of the sun. It was one of those bucolic places you come across sometimes in Sussex which is not dramatic but still takes your breath away. The painting is on wide edge canvas painted a muted purple colour which integrates into the edges of the painting and helps propel the viewer into the scenery. Painted on deep edge canvas, ready to hang, no frame needed and comes with certificate of authenticity
