About Gill Bustamante

I paint large semi-abstract oils that seek to capture, not just the visual details of a location, but its scents, sounds, and spiritual energy. They are inspired by encounters with landscapes, wildlife and birds, particularly the ancient landscapes of England.

My paintings are completely unique in style.
I often paint from memory as it better allows me to move beyond traditional realism, and into magical realism using colour, texture and light to express the magic I sense in wild meadows, forests, seas and rivers.
Animals, pathways, and portals are recurring motifs in my painting’s, often as symbols of transition, curiosity, and the mysteries that lie just beyond the visible. I am fascinated by the folklore and hidden stories woven into the countryside, and I strive to share that sense of wonder and connection through my art.

About this Artwork

The Secret Unicorn is a colourful romantic semi-abstract painting of a dappled white horse in an unashamedly magical landscape. It is 30x30x1.5 inches. The painting shows a white dappled horse swishing her tail and looking as if she just materialized out of nowhere. The setting hints at a river bank with pink flowers along the edge and the idea of trees and a meadow behind the horse. The inspiration for the painting was a walk I took last June across quiet farmland where I caught glimpses through thick hedgerow to the next field. A white mare was unaware I was watching her through a gap in hedge and was clearly having a wonderful time tossing her head and flexing her muscles in the sunny meadow she was in. It made me wonder if she would go the full Disney and turn into a unicorn. Unfortunately, she didn’t but the experience made me want to paint it anyway. I have included a photo I took of her to give some context. It is painted on deep edge canvas, white edges, no frame needed and is ready to hang.
