Pugilist, 1980

The image depicts the declining years of a professional boxer.
I apply the pastel in successive layers to achieve a soft structure, with some areas having a more robust, textured element. I use artist's hog's-hair brushes to manipulate some of the work to give it density. The work is painted on a Superior Studland-coloured board, as I like the rigidity and fine surface.
