About Leni Smoragdova

Leni Smoragdova {$M} is a multidisciplinary artist and the creator of Transaction Art, a conceptual universe exploring anonymity, identity, and the interplay of social phenomena. Born into a Jewish family and raised in Odessa, Smoragdova moved to London in 2004 to study at Central Saint Martins, where she began developing her unique artistic vision. Her work delves into the commercialization of art and the invisible forces that shape human interactions, often through the lens of collective authorship and anonymity.

Leni Smoragdova {$M} is not only the artist’s original name but also, through Transaction Art, a collective identity for numerous anonymous participants. This duality seamlessly merges individual originality with the anonymity of those who choose to remain invisible, forming a distinctive brand. Anonymity is central to this concept, embodied in the term Hidden Faces.

About this Artwork

For 3 months I can't work. Absolutely... I bought I cake, called to my new friends for a small cake's party, but nobody came.
It was Friday's night. The cake looked at me I felt deep loneliness... I put it in the bin in the street, went to the forest. It was midnight. I wanted to die. My friend called me, and we started to talk about her ex-boyfriends. I was lost. It was a dark and forest. I was absolutely alone. Suddenly a stranger with a white dog appeared. "Are you an artist?", he said smiling. "Why?" - He helped me to find the way to the city. Took a taxi for me. I was back to home. On the next morning I woke up and started to work again. My Muse was back to me.
