One of Four Drawings Exhibited as part of important London exhibition ‘Drawn to London with in the Shadow of the Tower’ 2018. The catalogue for this event has added to collections of the V&A and numerous other important institutions.
The exhibition asked select artist to take a look at London in its current climate. we then produced works that explored this theme.
I chose Trafalgar Square as my muse as it has such a varied cross section of society acting out the lives on this grand stage.
Homeless street artists create pavement art as tourists stream by up the steps of the National gallery to view the masters with in.
Buses, Cabs, cars, scooters and Bicycles grind along around the squares infrastructure.
From 8.00 - 9.00 the suited hurry to their jobs in a never ending river of grey. Gently tapping feet in unison. Costa's in hand they glide by quietly.
Then a lull. The homeless have the square almost to themselves for a brief moment.
Street performers emerge seamlessly as if from the very walls and pavements. They hover on scaffolds, tune there guitars, set up their acts..
The pavement artists begin their master work for the day.. Chalks at the ready. Larger in hand to ease their artist endeavours.
One man organises pennies into words and images that diminish Capitalism. All his wealth is spewed up by the the Thames at the turn each tide. He has amassed quite a copper fortune but it means nothing to him. For him this is the life he has chosen. Freed from the trappings of consumerism. Out side the rules of Society.
Suddenly it’s tourist time. The square once again fills as people trickle and then pour in and out of every crevice. On mass, selfie sticks aloft.. Chatter and laughter. They clime the mighty lions, zig zag the the square.
‘Look at this ..Look at that, He is floating! its so high.. Where are we going? This way!’
Swarming and swaying beneath the Triumphant architecture. Great Britain ever present. The grander of by gone times. Will These Majestic, grandiose structures witness our post Brexit Demise? Ask the man that sleeps on the street. He’s already there.
