This painting captures a coastal viewpoint near Uluwatu, where tropical vegetation once descended toward a turquoise ocean filled with shifting reflections of light and color. The scene was painted directly from nature during a period when Bali's southern coastline remained quieter and less developed.
What makes this work especially remarkable is that the landscape depicted here no longer exists in exactly the same form. In the years following its creation, parts of this coastline were altered by both natural geological processes and ongoing coastal development. As a result, the painting preserves a view that has become part of Bali's recent history.
