About Aleksandr Dubrovskyy

Mr Aleksandr Dubrovskyy was born in 1949 in Oryneno, Khmelnytsky Oblast, Ukraine.
He started painting early. Painting was his most favoured occupation, beyond all usual boyish interests and activities.
At seven he was admitted to the art school for children in Yenakiieve; at 16, Aleksandr entered Kharkiv College of Art (1965).

In 1969, after graduating from the College of Art, he travelled a lot and worked assiduously on portrait and landscape painting.
His continuing work at the academic villa in Sednyov offered Aleksandr a happy and unique opportunity to work together with, and learn from, such eminent painters as Konstantyn Lomykin, Fedor Zakharov, Nikolay Glushchenko, Viktor Shatalin, and Tatyana Yablonskaya. They profoundly influenced his artistic formation. Sednyov... this marvellous nook of Ukraine became the artist’s creative workshop.

Artwork

About this artwork

In Summer River Reflections, I was interested in the difference between the physical landscape and its unstable image on the surface of the river.

The trees have weight and structure. Their foliage is built from overlapping greens, turquoise shadows and warmer passages touched by sunlight. In the water, the same landscape begins to lose its certainty. Blue sky, pale clouds and dark foliage break into fragments of colour, and recognisable forms move towards abstraction.

This transition became central to the painting. The upper part is dense and enclosed by vegetation; the river introduces light, movement and an unexpected sense of space.

I wanted the reflection to remain visibly connected to the landscape without simply duplicating it. Water changes what it receives. A tree becomes colour, a cloud becomes a moving patch of light, and for a moment the river contains an entirely different version of the world above it.
